PBIS
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
Banks Middle School uses Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) to teach and promote a safe and civil school climate. PBIS is a framework for assisting school staff in using research-based practices to teach, monitor, reflect on, and support positive academic and social/behavioral development in students. PBIS principles emphasize that positive classroom management and preventive school discipline is integrated with effective academic instruction to maximize success for all students. With that, Banks Middle School has high expectations for student conduct.
Behavioral instruction focuses on developing skills for students to be safe, responsible and respectful citizens. Most behavior in school can be categorized in one of these headings. While the following information will provide an understanding of how this works, it does not include every potential behavior demonstrated in school.
All behaviors that violate the parameters of “Safe, Responsible and Respectful” will be addressed through progressive disciplinary practices intended to guide, teach and/or provide consequences for refusal to behave in a civil manner. This may include a student and/or parent conference with the teacher/principal, lunch or after school discipline, community service, or suspension or expulsion, depending on the severity of the infraction.
Levels
Here is a printable list of the PBIS Behavior Intervention Management Levels.
Recognition
At Banks Middle School, we have several opportunities for recognition of students who demonstrate exemplary behavior and academic effort and achievement.
Banks Bucks
Throughout the year, students may receive “Banks Bucks” for demonstrating kindness, helpfulness, and for personal accomplishments that demonstrate safe, responsible and respectful behavior. Students may save their Banks Bucks to purchase small rewards, or place their “Banks Buck” in a receptacle that is drawn from each Friday for a prize.
Outstanding Student Award
Each six-week progress/grading period, a boy and a girl from 7th and 8th grade will be selected by teachers to be honored as an “Outstanding Student”. This recognition goes to students who have demonstrated excellent responsibility and effort in schoolwork, who have demonstrated character, consideration and respect for others, and lead by example. Students will be honored at the six-week spirit assemblies and are eligible for Warrior Club.
School-wide Incentives
Throughout the school year, a committee of students work with a staff member to create motivating scenarios for students to work toward. Students may earn such things as free time, a school dance or other incentives determined by the committee.
